June marks the beginning of Year 3 of Pathways to Pedals, and it feels like the perfect opportunity to look back on what we’ve achieved together while also looking ahead to what’s next.
Pathways to Pedals was created with a simple goal: to remove barriers and help more people access cycling. Over the last two years, that idea has grown into a programme that has reached thousands of people, built strong partnerships, and helped many individuals discover the freedom, confidence, and enjoyment that cycling can bring.
Since launching, we have welcomed almost 4,000 people to our inclusive cycling try-out sessions. These sessions give people the opportunity to try a range of adapted and accessible cycles in a relaxed and supportive environment, often for the first time.
Alongside our try-out sessions, we have delivered 155 cycling sessions, helping people build confidence, improve wellbeing, develop skills, and enjoy being active with others.

Our free cycle loan programme has supported 197 people, giving them the chance to borrow a cycle and see how cycling can fit into their everyday lives. Whether it’s for getting outdoors, improving fitness, travelling independently, or simply having fun, these loans have helped people experience the benefits of cycling without the commitment of purchasing a cycle.
Partnership working has also been at the heart of the programme. Over the past two years, we have engaged with 218 organisations, including charities, community groups, schools, healthcare providers, and local authorities. These relationships have helped us reach more people and create new opportunities for inclusive cycling across the region.
While these numbers are something to celebrate, they only tell part of the story. Behind every session, loan, and partnership are people gaining confidence, making connections, trying something new, and discovering what is possible with the right support.
As we begin Year 3
We’re keen to reach even more people. If you live in Yorkshire and would like to try cycling, our free cycle loan programme could be the perfect place to start. We also run regular inclusive cycling sessions where you can try a range of cycles and receive support from our friendly team.
This summer, join us every Tuesday at York Sport in York and every Friday in Gateshead for our inclusive cycling sessions. Whether you’re completely new to cycling, looking to get back on a bike, or interested in trying an adapted cycle, we’d love to welcome you.
A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of the Pathways to Pedals journey so far, including participants, families, partners, funders, volunteers, and staff. Your support has helped make the programme what it is today.
Here’s to Year 3 and helping even more people discover the joy of cycling. 🚲
