The Cycle to Work Scheme is a UK government-supported employee benefit.  It was created to help people purchase a cycle and cycle equipment that would be used for travelling to and from work.

The main attraction is that you can pay for a cycle directly from your salary before Income Tax and NI are deducted, so the bike can cost substantially less than buying it normally.

The amount you can save is usually between 32% and 47% of a cycle and equipment’s original cost.

Furthermore, most employers will allow you to pay for the cycle over 12, 24 or 36 months, making the opportunity to acquire a cycle even more affordable as you can spread the repayments.

Most employers will use an outside company to administer their Cycle to Work scheme and these often have different rules and costs.

Some of the main companies employers use include:

  • Cyclescheme — large established provider with a broad retailer network.
  • Halfords Cycle2Work — closely associated with Halfords/Tredz and its participating retailers.
  • Green Commute Initiative — notably advertises no provider-imposed price cap.
  • Vivup — employee-benefits platform that also administers Cycle to Work.
  • Cycle Solutions — another large established provider.
  • Bike2Work — established provider with a broad participating-retailer model.
  • DASH Rides — newer, more digital-oriented approach.

How to Buy a Cycle from Get Cycling with a Cycle to Work voucher

1/ First check you are eligible for your Company’s Cycle to Work Scheme, how much you can purchase a cycle and equipment for, and what your repayment terms will be.

2/ Identify the cycle and equipment you would like following consultation with Get Cycling’s Customer Service Team.  Get Cycling will then provide you with a quotation that you can use to determine the required value of your voucher with your employer.

3/ Once your employer and their chosen Cycle to Work company have undertaken all the necessary paperwork, they will issue you with a voucher.

4/ Provide the voucher to Get Cycling’s Customer Service team.  They can then proceed to order your cycle and equipment and will handle the payment of the cycle directly with your organisation’s Cycle to Work scheme provider.

5/ Once your cycle is ready for collection/delivery our team will contact you accordingly.  Due to the nature of adapted cycles, you may often start making repayments through your salary prior to receiving the goods.  This is common for specialist and adapted cycles as they are usually custom built and can take up to 8-12 weeks to be delivered from the manufacturer.
