Welcoming Blesma, The Limbless Veterans Back to Get Cycling

This weekend we are pleased to be welcoming a group of members from Blesma to our York centre for a supported cycle ride.

Blesma supports serving and ex-service men and women who have lost limbs, or the use of limbs or eyesight. Their work focuses on rehabilitation, wellbeing and practical support, helping veterans and their families rebuild confidence and independence.

A Supported Try Out Session

During their visit, members will have the chance to try a range of inclusive cycles, including handcycles, recumbent trikes and upright trikes.

Our team will begin with a short, individual assessment. This helps us understand each rider’s mobility, strength, balance and goals. We then adjust the cycle to suit the person. This can include seat positioning, pedal adaptations, supportive straps or electric assist where appropriate.

Once everyone feels comfortable and confident, the group will head out together to explore the cycle lanes close to our shop. York has an extensive network of off-road and quieter routes, which makes it a good place for relaxed, social riding.

Riding the York Solar System Cycleway

This is not the first time Blesma members have ridden with us. In previous years, groups have enjoyed outings along the York Solar System Cycleway. This traffic-free route follows the line of an old railway and features a scale model of the solar system along the way.

It is a popular choice for inclusive group rides as it offers wide paths, gentle gradients and plenty of space to ride side by side.

The Value of Group Rides

For many disabled veterans, cycling offers more than physical exercise. It can provide:

  • A sense of freedom and independence
  • Time outdoors in a supportive setting
  • The chance to connect with others who share similar experiences
  • A boost in confidence through trying something new

Group sessions like this also allow riders to compare different types of cycles and consider what might work for them longer term.

We are looking forward to another positive visit and hope everyone has an enjoyable and empowering ride. If you would like to arrange a supported group session for your organisation, please get in touch with our team to discuss what is possible.
