Global Recycling Day

March 18th is Global Recycling Day.

Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not-too-distant future, it will run out.

Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognise, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first.

The mission of Global Recycling Day, as set out by the Global Recycling Foundation, is twofold:

1. To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue and that a common, joined-up approach to recycling is urgently needed.

2. To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around us – until this happens, we simply won’t award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve.

That’s why we must think again about what we throw away – seeing not waste, but opportunity.

Here at Get Cycling, we are trying to do our bit by recycling old innertubes. We have partnered up with Schwalbe to reduce the waste of innertubes going into landfill.

Drop in your old innertubes at our shop and we will send them over to the Schwalbe UK warehouse. Once there is enough for a full container, it’s shipped over to the Schwalbe factory in Indonesia. A fascinating process called devulcanization & recycling happens there – the energy used in those processes is only 20% of that used for producing new butyl rubber (that’s including all transportation!)
This recycled rubber is then used to make new Schwalbe innertubes! They are made of 20% recycled rubber and are 100% recyclable.

It couldn’t be easier – just drop off your old innertubes to us at our shop and know that you’re helping reduce landfill and contributing to the reuse and recycling of old material to make new!
