Non-Executive Directors Needed
We are currently looking for two Non-Executive Directors to join our board and take a share in our organisation’s strategic development and governance. We offer a fascinating and rewarding working environment in our growing not-for-profit social enterprise.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Non-Executive Directors provide creative contribution to the board by offering productive oversight and constructive challenge to the CEO and Executive Director.
As part of a team of 7 directors, the board are expected to bring independence to proceedings as they assist with business strategy and make sure risks are managed effectively.
Some of the duties include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring understanding and adherence to the core aims and mission of the organisation
- Assisting in the setting of strategy and objectives for the organisation
- Appointing the CEO
- Acting within powers set out in the organisation’s memorandum of association
- Ensuring that governance is effective, appropriate, and reflects best practice in the social enterprise and retail sectors
- Conforming to the highest standards of leadership and making appropriate decisions
- Encouraging the best use of financial resources
- Exercising reasonable care, diligence, and independent judgement
- Avoiding conflicts of interest and declaring interests in proposed transactions or arrangements
- Networking and promoting the success of the company
This is a crucial position right at the top of an exceptional and innovative social enterprise operating across the UK to a wide range of customers with disability and support needs.
Skills & Experience
Experience at board level is not essential, however, any experience working at management or leadership level is advantageous, as is experience working in retail, cycling, disability, or a social enterprise.
The successful candidate will have:

- Ability to build relationships with a variety of people
- Social awareness and clear communication skills
- A positive, supportive attitude
- Flexible approach to problem solving
- Ability to prioritise the needs of the organisation
- Quick learner with capacity to develop new skills
- Financial acumen and ability to offer strategic advice
The successful candidate will need to show an ability to cope with change and have a passion to help people with all sorts of special needs, and their families, to get cycling. We particularly welcome candidates with a lived experience of disability.
Working Conditions
This is an exciting role for someone with good social inclusion awareness.

- Voluntary position
- Fixed term, part-time approx. 3-4 hours per quarter
- Quarterly online meetings, weekdays only between 10am and 2pm
- Centre based in York, with a visit required for induction

Get Cycling CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company. Our social enterprise specialises in the sale, hire and repair of inclusive cycles across the UK.
We are an independent, community-owned bike shop based in York, with customers nationwide. We offer all kinds of bikes, trikes, adaptions, and accessories for anyone wanting to get into cycling: for people with disabilities or support needs, for families and friends, individuals, groups, students and workplaces.
We constantly look for ways of making cycles affordable, by keeping costs low, offering refurbished models as well as new, recycling materials, providing information on funding sources, and seeking income opportunities for free loans and low-cost hire programmes.
