ICE PERS Chainless System: Come and Try the Future of E-Assist Cycling
There’s a new addition to our showroom, and it’s unlike any electric assist trike we’ve had before.
The ICE PERS Chainless System is now available to try at Get Cycling, fitted to an ICE Adventure recumbent trike. We’re taking demonstration bookings now.
So, what makes it different?
What is the ICE PERS system?
PERS is a new chainless pedalling and electric assist system developed by CIXI for ICE Trikes.
Rather than using a traditional chain and drivetrain to transfer your pedalling to the rear wheel, the PERS system converts your pedalling into electrical power. That power is then sent to a motor in the rear wheel.
ICE describes it as a “ride-by-wire” system.
There is no traditional chain to maintain and no gears to change. Instead, the system responds to how you pedal and adjusts the resistance and assistance to match your chosen riding style.
And yes, it is quite different.
How does it feel to ride?
This is the difficult part to explain without actually riding one.
With a conventional e-assist trike, you pedal through a chain and gears while the motor adds assistance. With PERS, your pedals are effectively controlling the electrical system.
You can choose your preferred pedalling rhythm and the system adjusts the resistance as you ride.
There are five assistance modes:
- Muscular: no additional assistance
- Active: 50% assistance
- Balanced: 130% assistance
- Punch: 240% assistance
- Dynamite: 400% assistance
The system can provide a substantial amount of assistance when you need it, while still allowing you to choose how much effort you want to put in.
For riders who don’t enjoy changing gears, or who find managing gears difficult, the absence of traditional gear shifting could be particularly interesting.

No chain, no gears and regenerative braking
One of the most noticeable differences is what isn’t there.
There is no traditional chain or cassette and no gear shifting. The system also offers regenerative braking, which can send energy back into the battery as you slow down.
There is also reverse pedalling, which can be useful when manoeuvring the trike.
ICE says the system is designed to be clean and low maintenance, with no chain, cassette or transmission replacements expected for the first 50,000km under its stated system assumptions.
What’s under the bonnet?
The PERS system combines several components to create the chainless drive system.
The main specifications include:
700Wh battery
A large capacity lithium-ion battery mounted underneath the trike seat.
250W rear hub motor
The rear motor provides up to 75Nm of torque.
Five assistance levels
Choose how much electrical assistance you want, from none through to a substantial boost.
Regenerative braking
The system can recover energy when braking.
No traditional drivetrain
Your pedalling is converted into electrical power rather than being transferred through a conventional chain and gears.
ICE estimates that a range of around 40 to 60 miles or more may be possible, although actual range will depend on factors including rider weight, riding conditions, temperature, tyres, riding style and assistance level.

Why have we got one at Get Cycling?
We think new cycling technology is best experienced rather than simply read about.
The ICE Adventure is already a popular choice for people looking for a comfortable, stable recumbent trike. It has a relatively high seating position, good ground clearance and is designed for both road and trail riding. It is also available in different specifications, including rigid, rear suspension and full suspension options.
Adding PERS creates a completely different riding experience.
It may be particularly interesting if you:
- want electric assistance but don’t want traditional gears
- find changing gears difficult or tiring
- want to experiment with a different way of controlling an e-assist trike
- would like more assistance on hills
- are interested in recumbent cycling
- simply want to try the latest developments in cycling technology
That doesn’t mean PERS will be right for everyone. That’s why we encourage you to try it before making a decision.
Come and try the ICE PERS at Get Cycling
Our ICE Adventure with PERS is now in our showroom in York and we’re taking demonstration bookings.
During your visit, we’ll help you get set up on the trike and talk you through how the system works. You’ll then have the opportunity to ride it for yourself and see how it feels.
If you’re already familiar with recumbent trikes, it will be interesting to experience such a different approach to electric assistance.
If you’re completely new to recumbent cycling, that’s fine too. You don’t need to understand all the technology before you arrive.
You just need to be curious.
Book an ICE PERS demonstration
Not sure whether an ICE PERS, another recumbent trike or a completely different type of inclusive cycle would suit you?
That’s what our showroom is for.
We have a large range of specialist cycles available to try, and our team can help you explore the options without pressure.
Come and have a go. You might be surprised by what works for you.

Can’t get to our York showroom?
We know that travelling to York isn’t always easy, particularly when you’re looking for a specialist cycle and want to try it properly before making a decision.
That’s why we now offer a home demonstration service in selected locations.
Depending on where you live, we may be able to bring the ICE Adventure with PERS to you, so you can experience it without making the journey to our showroom.
Get in touch to enquire about home demo costs and location availability. We can check whether a home demonstration is possible in your area and talk you through what is involved.
