What happens when you mix women and inclusive cycling

Cycling means different things to different people. For some, it is freedom and independence. For others, it is confidence, friendship, adventure, or simply the chance to enjoy fresh air and movement outdoors.

At Get Cycling CIC we meet women from all walks of life who are rediscovering cycling in ways that work for them. Whether riding for wellbeing, commuting, rehabilitation, family days out, or social connection, more women are exploring the benefits of inclusive cycling and adapted bikes.

To celebrate York International Women’s Week we’re going to highlight a few of the feminine forces of nature that help keep us going!

Making Cycling More Accessible for Women

Traditional bicycles do not work for everyone. Many women come to us after years of believing cycling was no longer possible because of balance difficulties, disability, long-term health conditions, chronic pain, anxiety, or reduced mobility.

That is where inclusive cycling can make a life-changing difference.

Our range of specialist bikes includes:

  • Adult tricycle bikes
  • Low step-through cycles
  • Disability tricycles
  • Recumbent cycles
  • Side-by-side cycles
  • Electric assist trikes
  • Accessible bikes for disabled riders
  • Adapted cycles for additional needs

These cycles can help people feel stable, comfortable, and confident while enjoying the physical and mental benefits of cycling again.

Why More Women Are Choosing Tricycles and Adapted Bikes

For many riders, an adult tricycle bike offers reassurance and independence that a standard bicycle cannot.

Three wheels can provide:

  • Better stability
  • Easier mounting and stopping
  • More confidence on rides
  • Comfortable upright seating
  • Safer cycling at slower speeds
  • Support for riders with disabilities or health conditions

Recumbent cycles and specialist bikes are also becoming increasingly popular with women looking for comfort-focused cycling with less strain on joints, backs, shoulders, and wrists.

Cycling Is for Everybody

Inclusive cycling is not only about disability. It is about removing barriers and creating opportunities for everyone to ride in a way that feels enjoyable and achievable.

We regularly support:

  • Disabled women returning to cycling
  • Mothers cycling with children
  • Older riders looking for stability
  • Women recovering from injury or illness
  • Riders with learning disabilities or neurodivergence
  • People who have never felt confident on a standard bike

Every person’s journey into cycling looks different, and there is no single “right” way to ride.

Try Inclusive Cycling in York

Our team at Get Cycling CIC helps people explore different cycles and discover what works best for them. Trying a cycle in person can often open up possibilities people thought were no longer available.

From recumbents and tricycle bikes to disability bikes and specialist cycles, we believe cycling should be accessible, enjoyable, and welcoming for everyone.
