Looking Back at the York E Cycle Switch Scheme
In July 2021, City of York Council launched the E-Cycle Switch Scheme. The project gave people living, working or studying in York the chance to borrow an e-cycle from a local bike shop and try it with no obligation to buy.

After completing a trial, participants could apply for a grant towards the cost of an e-cycle from a participating shop.
We were proud to be part of the scheme and to offer our range of inclusive e-cycles for one-day trials. The aim was simple. To give more people, including those with disabilities and those living with long-term health conditions, the chance to experience the benefits of electric-assist cycling.
Inclusive e-cycles we offered for trial
Our focus was, and still is, on making cycling accessible to as many people as possible. As part of the scheme, we offered a wide range of adapted and inclusive models.
Recumbent trikes
Including models from ICE, such as the Adventure. These trikes are suitable for riders with significant balance difficulties, as you do not need to balance on two wheels. The seated position can also be more comfortable and supportive. Some riders found they could ride one-handed, for example, after a stroke.

Upright trikes
Including the Van Raam Easy Rider. With three wheels for stability, upright trikes can offer reassurance to riders who feel unsteady on a two-wheeled bike. They can also be fitted with supportive saddles, adapted pedals and other accessories for added security.

Tandems – including the Van Raam Fun2Go. Great for riders who can contribute to pedalling but don’t have the motor skills to be able to safely ride on their own.
Why schemes like this matter
For many people, trying an inclusive e-cycle is the key step. Electric assist can make hills manageable, reduce fatigue and open up longer journeys. A supported trial gives people the time and space to decide what feels safe and comfortable.
The 2021 scheme offered grants of up to £800 towards the cost of an e-cycle, subject to eligibility and conditions at the time. It was limited to adults in the City of York Council area who did not already own an e-cycle.

Although that specific scheme has now ended, the need for affordable access to inclusive cycling remains.
We continue to:
- Offer trials of inclusive cycles
- Provide advice on funding and grants where available
- Support individuals, families and organisations to find the right solution
