We have a whole website dedicated to disability cycling
This is an example of our Disability Cycling Festival. If you are in the public or voluntary sector, and want us to bring it to your region, please get in touch
You can also find more details on our Bikes not Barriers website
For people with disabilities cycling offers exercise, fun, mobility and independence: but too many cycles are bought without impartial expert advice, and without the chance to try a range of options out. As a community interest company we see it as our role to help individuals, charities and local authorities to make the right choices. There is no need to buy inappropriate cycles when better and often cheaper solutions are available.
We have unified all our various special needs activities under the name Bikes not Barriers: to serve both individuals and the public sector. We send our special needs try-out roadshow around the country, and have equipped our HQ in York as a national centre of excellence. We have specialist staff and around 50 different demo cycles to try-out. We have tricycles, handcycles, wheelchair tandems, wheelchair transporters, steer-from-the-rear tandems, tandem tricycles, low step-over bikes, side-by-sides, etc. Plus lots of bikes for the rest of the family. We are working on a dedicated website and national special needs cycling festival. Special needs is a major development area for us and now makes up about a third of our activities. Get Cycling’s Chief Executive, Jim McGurn, has a son with Down’s Syndrome, and can advise from experience.
We sell special needs cycles of all kinds: new and refurbished. All our demonstration fleet can be tried out in York, by appointment. They can also be hired for half a day or more: and we are on the cycle route network which takes you along delightful traffic-free riverside cyclepaths. In fact we are 90 seconds from the junction of many paths, thanks to the Millennium Cycling Bridge over the river.
We always have a number of refurbished cycles for sale, and we buy used cycles from individuals who no longer need their
cycle for whatever reason. Our on-line shop shows all the new special needs cycles and adaptations we have, but we prefer
prospective clients to phone for individual advice. The shop does not detail the refurbished cycles which came and go fairly quickly.

For charities, schools and the public sector we provide a full assessment, specification, delivery and training service. Previous public sector clients include Disability Sport Scotland, Riverside Special School Antrim, Disability Sport Cambridge, City of York Council, LB Waltham Forest, Applefields School, Blackburn and Darwin Council. We can provide testimonials.

“I couldn't wait any longer to say a very big thank you to you all for such an amazing day on Monday. In all the years
I have been at the school I don't think we have ever had an event that has been enjoyed and appreciated as much by everyone -
pupils, teachers and parents alike! It was lively, fun and very professionally delivered, both inside during the presentation and
outside on the bikes. We have pupils with many diverse needs but somehow that just wasn't a problem. Well done to you all and thank
you once again.”
