Residents of Dundee earn their new bikes

April 5th, 2011

Dundee Travel Active called in the Get Cycling BikeBoost team to help raise the numbers of people using bikes for everyday journeys in Dundee. Targetting residents from 4 wards near the city centre BikeBoost offered 100 people the chance to earn their bikes by using for trips around the city.

Participants were lent a quality commuting bike, security and safety equipment and offered cycle training. In return they promised to use the bike for utility journeys such as commuting and shopping and to log those journeys online or in diaries. After one month and six months the new cyclists were asked to bring their bikes for a check over and for the BikeBoost team to ask them about their cycling experiences. If at the end of the 6 month loan the individuals could show that they were using the bike they got to keep it.

91% of participants earned their bikes, the returned bikes were then used by other residents.

19.7 miles average weekly cycle journeys by participants after 6 months

“BikeBoost Dundee showed that when you give people the opportunity to ride a quality bike they will use it regularly. BikeBoost is great because it is repeatable anywhere in the country and could be an ideal part of any Local Authorities Local Sustainable Transport fund Bid” said Terry Blackwood Sales and Marketing Manager at Get Cycling.
